EMERGENCY RADIO PROCEDURES
For a full understanding all the radio procedures why not attend the RYA VHF (SRC) Radio course.

IF THE VESSEL OR A PERSON IS IN GRAVE AND IMMINENT DANGER AND IMMEDIATE
ASSISTANCE IS REQUIRED CARRY OUT THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE

What you must do:

Check main battery switch is on, switch VHF radio on to high power setting.
Select CH 16 (CH 16 may automatically go onto high power)

DEPRESS TRANSMIT BUTTON on the micro phone and say slowly and clearly:

MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY

This is...................................................(repeat name of vessel 3 times)

Mayday

This is...................................................(Name of vessel spoken once)

My position is........................................(latitude and longitude, or true bearing and distance
from a known point).

IF YOU DON'T KNOW, DON'T GUESS!

I am......................................................(sinking, on fire etc.)

I require immediate assistance

I have.....................................................(Total number of persons on board)

Any other information..............................(Lifejackets, liferaft, flares etc)

Over - this means please reply.

RELEASE THE TRANSMIT BUTTON and listen for an acknowledgement.

KEEP LISTENING ON CH 16 FOR INSTRUCTIONS.
IF AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT IS NOT RECEIVED THEN REPEAT THE DISTRESS CALL.


DISTRESS PROCEDURE FOR DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING (DSC) VHF SETS

What you must do:

Check main battery switch is on, switch on the VHF/DSC radio.
Open the cover to access the RED distress button.
Press the RED button once.
If there is time select DISTRESS TYPE; fire, sinking, MOB from the menu.
Press and hold down the RED button for 5 seconds.
Wait 15 seconds then depress the transmit button on the hand microphone.
CH 16 is selected automatically for you

PRESS TRANSMIT BUTTON on the micro phone and say slowly and clearly:

MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY

This is...................................................(repeat name of vessel 3 times)
Callsign .................................................MMSI.....................................................
Mayday
This is...................................................(Name of vessel spoken once)

'Distress call Ack (Acknowledgement) from...... 'should be displayed on the screen, showing that the Coast Guard has received your digital distress message.
