Proficiency in Security Awareness (STCW)
A requirement for security training for Shipboard Personnel
The STCW Convention and Code as amended by the Manila amendments (2010) contains new requirements regarding security training. All personnel employed or engaged on board ships to which the ISPS Code (The International Ship and Port Facility Security Code) applies require this training. WHO SHOULD ATTEND PSA?
A security course for all members of ship’s crews who do not have designated security duties onboard & who do not require SSO or PDSD certification plus those who wish to work at sea. This includes pursers, waiters, entertainment staff, cooks, stewards, hairdressers, nail technicians and receptionists, massage and beauty therapists, fitness instructors, dancers, physicians, acupuncturists, etc.
COURSE CONTENT
- A working knowledge of maritime security terms and definitions, including those that relate to piracy and robbery
- An understanding of international maritime security policy
- An understanding of maritime security levels and their impact on security measures and procedures aboard ship and in port facilities
- How to report a security incident
- An understanding of security related contingency plans
- How to recognise security threats, including piracy and armed robbery
- How to recognise weapons, dangerous substances and devices and an understanding of the damage they can cause
- The importance of information security
- An understanding of the importance of security related drills and exercises including those relating to anti piracy and anti armed robbery
On completion of the training, you will have sufficient knowledge to:
- Contribute to the enhancement of maritime security on their ship through heightened awareness
- Recognise security threats
- Understand the need for and methods of, maintaining security awareness and vigilance
OUR PSA INSTRUCTORS
PSA training is carried out by MCA & DfT Maritime accredited trainers. Our trainers have the highest levels of maritime security experience, as it is their primary job following years of military experience. They were amongst the first trainers in the UK and internationally to run the PSA and PDSD course. One of our trainers was on a vessel boarded by pirates, on an unarmed security task. COURSE DURATION AND FEE

CERTIFICATION
On successful completionof the course, candidates will be issued the MCA approved STCW as amended, Regulation VI/6 paragraph 1 and STCW Code Section A-VI/6 paragraph 4 'Proficiency in Security Awareness' Certificate.

PDSD – Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
Requirements for Security Training for Shipboard Personnel.
The STCW Convention and Code as amended by the Manila amendments (2010) contains new requirements regarding security training. This training is required by all personnel employed or engaged on board ships to which the ISPS Code applies.
Training in Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD) must be undertaken by all seafarers & security personnel engaged on ship who have designated duties under the ships security plan.
'Those carrying out personal close protection and/or ship protection duties on ISPS Code compliant ships do not need to hold SSO qualifications unless they are the designated SSO on the vessel in which they are serving. However, as they will be carrying out ships security duties they will have to hold an MCA approved or recognised Certificate of Proficiency in Designated Security Duties.'

Who Should Attend?
All seafarers & security personnel who have designated security duties under the Ships Security Plan, including anti-piracy and anti-armed robbery related activities. Former armed forces personnel looking to move into maritime security who will need this knowledge and certification as a requirement of their position. Also those with a Maritime background looking to work in Ship/Offshore Security.
Certification
