Personal Survival Techniques (STCW)
This 1 day course covers both theoretical and practical elements and teaches the actions to be taken by individuals to protect themselves in the event of ship abandonment and emergency situations. It includes a practical swimming pool session with immersion suits, lifejackets and inflatable life raft drills. You will develop knowledge, understanding and practical competence where appropriate in:
- Types of emergency situations which may occur, such as collision, fire, foundering
- Types of life-saving appliances normally carried on ships, equipment in survival craft
- Principles concerning survival, raft first aid, hypothermia and cold water shock
- Location devices, including radio equipment and rescue
- Don a life jacket and an immersion suit, safely jump from a height into the water
- Right an inverted life raft while wearing a life jacket
- Swim and board a liferaft from ship (pool side) and water while wearing a life jacket
ASSESSMENT
There is continual assessment throughout the day, practical pool participation and a short written assessment.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Please note that there is a practical element that involves some physically demanding exercises including jumping from a height into the water (swimming pool), liferaft, pool drills and working in confined spaces and moving or being a casualty.
Any candidate unsure of their health and fitness as to their ability to participate in such activities should consult their doctor. You are signing the declaration to state that you are able to participate in the training.

TIME AND LOCATION
The course will be run at the PHSS Training Centre, starting 0830, finishing at approx 1630 hrs. Please check your course confirmation for your date/start time.
CONFIRMATION AND DIRECTIONS
Will be sent once the booking form and course fee are received.
EQUIPMENT
For the practical swimming pool session please bring: your towel, swim wear, you MUST bring long trousers and long sleeve top no shorts or t-shirt, bag for wet clothing, £1 for changing locker.
Please ensure your clothing is clean and all pockets are emptied of rubbish. Lifejacket, immersion suit etc are provided. The course will car share to the pool and parking will need to be paid for. The MCA sea survival book and handout are provided.
DOCUMENTATION
You will need to provide a copy of photographic identification (Drivers Licence or Passport. Merchant Navy Personnel must hold a valid ENG 1) on the day. Your ID will be checked by the Training Facilitator on the course. This is an essential MCA requirement and you will be unable to participate in the training if the ID has not been viewed and verified. Note a certificate will not be issued without the correct identification.
REFRESHMENTS
Light refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits) are available throughout the day. You will require a packed lunch and any other refreshments you may like.
CERTIFICATION
Awarded on successful completion of the course.
